The Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment () is a single, virtual system that scientists use to share computing resources, data, and expertise. People around the world use these resources and services—things like supercomputers, data collections, and new tools—to improve our planet. XSEDE is funded by the National Science Foundation (), and led by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications () at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. It supports 16 supercomputers and high-end visualization and data analysis resources across the country.
XSEDE is composed of multiple partner institutions including:
- (TACC) at the University of Texas, Austin
- (SDSC) at the University of California, San Diego
- (CCT) at the Louisiana State University
- at Georgia Institute of Technology
- (NICS), at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville
- (PSC) at the Carnegie Mellon University and University of Pittsburgh
- (CHPC) at University of Southern California
Each of these service providers contributes tools, services, and or expertise to the collection of . These resources include High Performance Computing (HPC) machines and High Throughput Computing (HTC) machines as well as visualization, data storage, and testbeds.
Campus Champions Program uses local HPC professionals and students to introduce university campuses and students to XSEDE services. Participating campuses have direct access to the XSEDE staff and expertise as well as resources for research and assistance using XSEDE resources.
Campus Champions engage with researchers and educators to:
- Provide information about XSEDE and other cyberinfrastructure resources
- Secure start-up allocations of computing time on XSEDE systems
- Capture information about problems and challenges that need to be addressed
- Arrange awareness sessions about XSEDE resources and services
- Provide training workshops
- Provide contact information for XSEDE partners
- Facilitate quick resolutions to issues
